Question #5 > Helping Out A Goalie

The goalie for the orange team loses his stick and it is knocked behind the net. During play, a defenseman on his team picks up the goalie stick. On the way to giving the stick back to the goalie, he blocks a pass with his skate and kicks the puck into the corner. Is this a legal play? If not, what penalty should be called?

The orange defensemen was within the rules to pick up the goalies stick to bring it back to him. However, once he played the puck a minor penalty is assessed for playing with more than one stick.

Rule 301 (e) states:
"A minor penalty for equipment violation shall be assessed to a player or goalkeeper who participates in the play while he is in possession of more than one stick, except that no penalty shall be assessed to a player who is accidentally struck by the puck while he is carrying a replacement stick to a teammate."

Since the orange defense man intentionally played the puck, with two sticks, he should be assessed a minor penalty for a equipment violation.
